The Warehouse in Chicago

INSPIRATION

We have to know where we came from. The origins of House music is a story that needs to be celebrated. Rooted in African American and Latin communities of Chicago, dance clubs like the Warehouse were havens for the LGBTQ+. Luminaries like Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy were DJs in this post disco era, evolving the sounds of Philly Soul, Motown, and European electronic music to create their own music. This new genre known as House music became a global phenomenon that we continue to celebrate today.

House Hero Video Game

80’s Video Games

The 80’s are often represented by 8-bit graphics, video games like TRON and Space Invaders, and music genres of rock, new wave, and synth-pop. The electronic dance music from the underground like House and Techno are underrepresented. Our goal was to connect House music with an 80s style video game called House Hero. The game tells the story of two DJs on a mission to share the love of dance music with

Final Concept Render

DESIGN

The mission was to create a larger than life plus fully immersive experience. Allowing simultaneous gameplay among 8 players, the game is driven by an original soundtrack of House music inspired from the 80s and brought into the modern era.

 

Technical Specs

 

DIMENSIONS:

  • Structure: 13’ tall x 32’ diameter

  • Consoles: 7’ wide x 4’ tall x 4.5’ deep

  • LED Screens: 5’ wide x 9’ tall

MATERIALS: Aluminum circular truss by Global Truss and PlusTruss. RGB LED strips diffused by silicon channel provided by Hollywood LEDs. Custom consoles fabricated by Chuck Overcash, made of plywood and coated in poured resin.

TECHNOLOGY: Software: Ableton Live for music playback, Touch Designer for lighting design, House Hero video game for MacOS. Hardware: Mac Mini. Lighting and music programming by Maxwell Keene.

MUSIC: Original music created by Nathan McQueen, Logan Starks, and Dylan Jeffreys. Creative Direction by Jerry Lee.

SOUND: Suggested speaker setup of 4 - 12” amplified PA speakers and 4 - 18” powered subwoofers.

ENGINEERING: High wind action plan rated to 30 mph. Ballast requirement of 800 lbs per outside baseplate (4) plus 500 lbs for inner baseplate (center of structure). Engineer stamp from Andrew L. Savage, P.E.
